Elbert Daugherty began his aviation career when he joined the U.S. Air Force in April of 1957. Elbert has been flying airplanes for more than 50 years. He holds a Private Pilot’s license.

Elbert retired from Shaw Industries in Trenton, Ga. He then became the airport manager for the Town of Stevenson. He was appointed Airport Manager in Scottsboro in March 2008.

The Scottsboro Municipal Airport also known as Word Field has undergone many changes throughout the years. With the assistance of an active Airport Advisory Board, city government and grants from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), the airport has experienced much growth.

With more than 5,200 feet in length, the runway can accommodate business and private jets. The Runway Lighting System for Runway 4/22 consists of Pilot Control Lighting, Runway End Identifier Lights (REIL) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI).

The Scottsboro Municipal Airport offers a recently constructed, modern terminal facility that provides pilots and visitors a place to relax during layovers or while refueling. The new aircraft ramp is equipped with tie downs for 16 aircraft.

The Scottsboro Municipal Airport offers a modern fuel system for 100 LL and Jet-A fuel. A new Aircraft Maintenance facility and eight FBO hangars were recently completed and a security drive gate and new airport beacon installed.

Perimeter fencing provides the airport property with security and runway safety.

The airport provides a base to approximately 30 private or business aircraft.

Airport Manager Elbert Daugherty is a licensed pilot with more than 30 years flying experience.

The Scottsboro Airport is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily.
